Agreed, I went to Tanglewood a couple of times for the BSO when I was at UMass Amherst in the 80's and it was a great time. We had picnic blankets and lawn chairs back on the lawn, brought our own food and wine and had a lovely evening.
Symphonic Rock - could go either way, I suppose. Bound to be a good time listening to the songs of Hunter/Garcia, and Warren Haynes is sure to play his heart out.
About 12 years ago I saw the British Rock Symphony. It was a 7 piece rock band backed by 72 piece symphony orchestra and choir. They gave a treatment to classic rock songs from Britain's finest - Beatles, Stones, Floyd, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Procul Harem - oh and a few stars including Gary Brooker from Procul Harem, and Roger Daltrey, and a couple other singers, I think Zak Starkey played Drums and Simon Townsend played guitar. They toured England and all the shows were outdoors at stately manor homes. It all ended with fireworks and I bought the studio cd they put out.
In the program or cd liner notes there was info by the producer about his idea for the project. He said (something to the effect) that through the years, there had been several "symphonic" arrangements of rock music, and rock arrangements of classical music, but never before had anyone done a rock symphony. He made the distinction between symphony and symphonic, saying that symphonic implies by definition it is "like" a symphony. Roger Daltrey said it was rock 'n' roll to its core.
I would go see the Garcia symphony if I got the chance. I would probably go for the cheaper tickets on the lawn, personally. That's just me.

Good times for sure! Some of my favorite memories are from the years 84-89 when I went there. It was when I really became a deadhead too. A lot of who I am today stems from the choices I made there, for good or ill. (mostly good, I feel) I went back to the happy valley visiting friends till about 92 but haven't been there since. And every time I'm home in NH visiting family, I always want to make the trip down memory lane for a look around and to show my wife and kids Amherst and Northampton. Haven't made it yet, hopefully this coming summer. Unfortunately it won't be during the date of that concert or I would definitely go to the show there.

Yeah, polarized, I was there from 88-93. I was living in Northeast at the time you were probably there. I didn't get into the Dead until much later, though, much to my chagrin. I visited Amherst about 3 years ago. For all it's changed, there's a lot that is the same, like the residence halls. Take care.

Tanglewood is an awesome place and in all honesty...the lawn is better anyway. You can spread out with blankets and a picnic basket. I live in Albany, NY (about an hour away) and my girlfriend and I go at least once every year . We bring a basket with some wine or beer and some food and just chill out.
